A lot of people want to grow their own organic garden, yet neglect to do so because they aren’t sure where to start. It can seem like a daunting task to learn all that it takes to have a successful garden the natural way. Once you’ve read through this article, you will feel more confident about creating the garden of your dreams.

Plant strawberries for your children. Children love to pick their own fruit right out of the garden, and will be more willing to help with the process if they get something out of it.

If you’re growing plants indoors, keep your thermostat around 65 or 75 degrees daily. The plants need this temperature in order to effectively grow. You can also buy a heat lamp to maintain ideal conditions for your inside plants during the winter.

Preparing the soil for your perennial garden is easy. Take your spade and work up a thin layer of soil. Turn that soil over, then spread a few inches of wood chips on the newly turned area. After a few weeks, dig, then plant your perennials.

When your plants begin to sprout, they can survive in somewhat cooler temperatures. You should move your sprouted plants farther from the heat when they are past the sprouting stage. If you used plastic wrap to insulate your seedlings, you should now remove it. Observe your seeds carefully so that you can make these changes as soon as they start sprouting.

Make gardening efficient. Have your tools laid out in an orderly way so you do not have to search for them. You can prepare what you need beforehand, keep it all handy in a toolbox or a shed, and you will be ready to work in your garden at a moment’s notice. If you use lots of tools, consider using a tool belt or even just some pants that have lots of pockets.

To avoid tracking the mud and dirt that will get on your gardening shoes, use plastic bags. When you do this, your flow stays going, and you can just get right back out to your garden and finish quick.

The compost pile should include equal parts of dried material and green plant material. Add grass clippings, waste from fruits and vegetables, leaves, and weeds for the green materials in your compost pile. Paper and straw are dry plant materials. Materials to avoid during composting include diseased plants, meat, ashes and charcoal.

Consider adding mulch for healthier soil. Mulch will protect and nourish the soil. Mulch will keep the soil at an ideal temperature and protect the roots. The soil will also stay moist longer because it reduces evaporation. This will also help to keep weeds under control.

Be careful with the amount of water that you’re giving your plants when gardening. Roots need to draw in nutrients via the soil, and they cannot do this if they’re flooded with water. Only water as necessary when there is no rain in the forecast, or for plants which need extra watering. If rain is in the forecast, it is best not to water that day.

Always give your garden the benefit of looking beneath the upper portions of a plant. When buying tomato seedlings, avoid the ones with a bad root system or green starts. These starts can stay on the tomato seedlings for a long time, and the seedling won’t start to grow until these starts have gone.

It is easy to set up a perennial garden by following these simple instructions. Flip up the turf using a spade or shovel, then cover the exposed area with a thin layer of wood chips, about three or four inches. You’ll be able to dig into your new garden to plant out perennials within a few weeks.

If you apply the suggestions you’ve learned from this article, creating an organic garden shouldn’t seem daunting. Apply these tips and you will quickly be eating luscious and wholesome foods, that you grew yourself!
